Pop Culture: You have WHAT on your bra?!

Pop culture is fun but I am not sure that I want pop culture on my bra.

An annoyed looking mushroom and a pipe sounds like a mood killer to me!

However ‘shrooms sound positively desirable compared to a set of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle eyes staring at you!

Those eyes are going to haunt me for weeks!

Marks and Spencer Smokey Bacon Lentil Tubes – Making icky sound healthy

I remember when Walkers cheese and onion crisps weren’t suitable for vegetarians but their smoky bacon crisps were. As I don’t like cheese and onion I didn’t mind and smoky bacon is a very artificial-tasting flavour at the best of times!

This is probably because smoky bacon crisps are generally flavoured by a lot of paprika and very little else, but it does mean that every manufacturer that I’ve noticed has veggie friendly smoky bacon crisps.

The start of every year does seem to involve all the local supermarkets trying to push ‘healthy’ foods onto consumers – it is debatable how healthy or edible these foods really are. In Marks and Spencer I couldn’t avoid the huge display of ‘healthy’ crisps which were made with lentils rather than potato – which made them a *mere* 90 calories per bag.

I rarely eat crisps but these sounded interesting and were on offer, so conned by a combination of money off and healthy snacking I bought a multipack of smoky bacon lentil crisps.

The fairest thing I can say about them is they were not nice, I didn’t even finish my half of the initial packet that I shared with my ever-patient husband. He didn’t actively hate them as much as I did, but he hasn’t remembered that there are still four more individual packets in the cupboard so they can’t have been good!

Nail art: Purple Flowers – Word press doesn’t want to let me post this

It’s cold, grey and raining, I’d rather like it to be Spring. With that in mind I’m feeling in the mood for purple flowers in my nail art. Of course if WordPress stopped eating this post it would be nice.

Although preferably purple flowers that don’t look like they belong on curtains…

These remind me of cherry blossom, although I think the glitter would look better without the flowers!

I do like these purple daisies, although they do look a little child-like.

Strictly speaking these flowers are white, however the background is so purple that I feel it counts! I know that I’d currently need a stencil to get the dainty details but these give me something to aim for!

Film: ‘WALL-E’ – Kneel before your new robot overlord

WALL-E is an animated Pixar film that I somehow didn’t get around to watching for a surprisingly long time.

Put simply WALL-E is a robot who was created to tidy up the Earth whilst humanity were on a spaceship cruise ship – although this ship isn’t big enough to have possibly taken everyone and they all sound American. He is also the last active Wall-E unit and has been ‘alive’ for around 700 years – the cruise ship left earth 705 years ago.

(WALL-E poster)

He can communicate with robotic beeps that conveniently sound similar to words, he also cannibalises replacement parts from the inactive WALL-E units.

In short, WALL-E is a sentient being trapped on a waste-strewn Earth, given an impossible task, no companionship except cockroaches and cannibalises his fellow robots to stay alive. This combination of factors is actually a very scary premise and after the first 15 minutes I was half expecting WALL-E to confirm that he had gone insane and to set fire to the enormous, endless piles of rubbish causing the entire planet to combust.

What actually happened was scarier; WALL-E continues compacting the rubbish into neat squares and constructs tall buildings from these squares. Then when a trigger-happy robot called EVE arrives on Earth he stalks her and builds effigies of her out of rubbish.

After a curious sequence of events WALL-E ends up on the cruise ship and starts causing chaos – including insurrection and rioting. The film paints this in a positive light and as being accidental, however the film is starting to feel like an unreliable narrator, perhaps it is a propaganda piece produced to ensure that humanity thinks fondly of their new robot overlord and overlook his evil master-plan.

(Still from ‘WALL-E’ – behold the beginning of the end!)

Spoilers and conspiracy theories ahead.

After more curious events the spaceship cruise ship and its limited human cargo arrive back on Earth proclaiming their intent to heal the world and grow crops – including pizza plants.

Over the end credits there are some still drawings which look to give the impression that humanity managed to, at least, start this healing and growing. However I wasn’t convinced, I think the robots took over and enslaved humanity, these drawings were cave paintings of the dreams that were trampled under robotic feet and treads.

Marcus Pelegrimas’ ‘Blood Blade’ – “What the hell is that thing supposed to be?”

Based on the cover and the back blurb I wasn’t sure if ‘Blood Blade’ was going to be more Urban Fantasy or Horror. It isn’t really either, I guess “Dark Fantasy” would work but that is such a vague term it is almost meaningless! Plus it makes me think of nympho fae serial killers, despite never have come across a book featuring that combination.

Anyway… The back blurb focuses on the fact that in this world people don’t know about vampires, werewolves and other beasties. There is also a mention of hunters, I mean guardians, called Skinners.

Blood Blade book

My first instinct is that this is an odd name for the protectors of world; normally you’d expect something a little less openly hostile.  Also if you’re going to name a group something that intriguing then the least you can do is explain it. Technically there is a scene where someone does skin a werewolf in the car of a moving car, but it isn’t made clear if this is a regular occurrence for these “guardians”.

There are a number of things that aren’t really explained by the book, Vampires are referred to as Nymars and can cope with sunlight and garlic. There are multiple different types of werewolves based on the purity of their bloodline – this seems to be full bloods, half blood and mongrels.

This information is grudgingly shared by the book and with the main character Cole, because he is as clueless as the reader. Cole was a computer game person – his role seems to dance between designer and programmer, before he went on an extreme hunting trip that went wrong in a way that really didn’t actually make that much sense.

(Still from ‘Ginger Snaps‘)

Due to a series of pretty unbelievable and inconsistent events he ends up working with a woman called Paige, who has information and won’t share it until the very last minute. This tends to put Cole in more danger than is necessary, although given Cole’s dire attempts at flirting constantly I can see why Paige might prefer him dead. Paige is one of the worst lead female characters I have read in a while, she has no personality and is a smug know-it-all who doesn’t share vital information; in a horror movie she would be the sort of victim that the audience cheer their demise and enjoy the desecration of their corpse being left embedded on some railings. I REALLY didn’t like her!

The plot has a big bad guy, various minions, one super minion and vampire hookers. I’ve seen ‘Death Valley’ and have a pretty high expectation of vamp hookers – ‘Blood Blade’ doesn’t meet these expectations.

death valley tv show

(Still from ‘Death Valley’)

Overall the book didn’t meet expectations, the plot was iffy, the dialogue was clunky, the characters were hard to care about as they were very two dimensional, there was no background on anyone or anything so reading this book was a bit like wandering around in the dark waiting for something interesting to happen.

The action scenes were ok but felt like someone was writing instructions for how the fight scene in a computer game should look. I played a lot of arcade Tekken one summer and the action parts of the book felt like that- but clunkier.

There are a number of sequels but I won’t be picking them up as the world that Pelegrimas created could be set on fire and I’d still be more interested in painting my nails than finishing the chapter.

Knee – Shaking my way towards a MRI scan

As far as I can tell I still have patella femoral joint issues (aka runner’s knee) – specifically with my left knee. I haven’t seen the physiotherapist for a month now, my left knee still feels tight and stiff, often sore. The muscles on the outer quad sometimes shake uncontrollably on both legs – most recently on Monday in the middle of yoga class.

I know that muscle shakes can be caused by dehydration or insufficient good fuel – I think that Monday’s shakes could have been aided by a little too much sugar that morning.

It could have been muscle fatigue as I have been a little bit lax  with my physio-suggested leg exercises for the last couple of weeks. The shakes were during moves that I’ve done a lot before – variations on Warrior 1 and 2, so my body should know that it can pull these moves off. Although if my stupid muscles haven’t been exercises and stretched properly then that would probably not help – plus the sugar thing…

Alternatively, my yoga teacher has suggested that  the shaking in when my legs feel vulnerable, I respectfully counter that her tugging my leg into “better alignment” might not have helped with the cause or effect.

knee xray

(Photo that I’ve used before somewhere on a previous post – probably about my knee…)

It has occurred to me that perhaps I should try to push the leg more – to see if I can run yet, even if just for a minute. But I an nervous about trying this without a physio saying to do so, something that I am not prepared to spend £50 on an appointment to see if I get.

The NHS have me on hold, my six NHS physio sessions were woefully inadequate, I am booked in for an MRI scan in a month’s time. Google tells me that the MRI scan should give a decent view of bones, cartilage, tendons, ligaments and other random stuff – so in theory that should confirm (or deny) if  there is anything wrong that physiotherapy alone can’t fix.

To sum up – my knee is still not right. Both legs sometimes randomly have weird shaking muscles and I have to wait to see if the MRI scan shows any underlying cause. Joy.

Food: Ben and Jerry’s Peanut Butter Cup Ice Cream

I really like Reese’s Peanut butter cups and have them as a very rare treat as a) they aren’t exactly healthy and b) they are a silly price in the UK.

A pregnant friend has been raving about Ben and Jerry’s Peanut Butter Cup Ice Cream – admittedly she is eating it alongside cucumber. I didn’t rush into buying any as I wasn’t sure about peanut flavoured ice cream even if it did contain scrummy chocolate & peanut butter cups.

It turns out that I shouldn’t have worried, whilst I would have preferred vanilla ice cream there were enough chunks of peanut butter cup for me to overlook this!

I have eaten half a tub of Ben and Jerry’s Pish Food in one sitting a couple of times, however there was no risk of that with the Peanut Butter Cup as I found it on the threshold of too sweet.

Given the choice of spending £3 to £4 on this ice cream or £3 to £4 on Reese’s peanut butter cups I would go with Reese’s every time.
