Pondering what makes a good film

Having recently watched a couple of films that people have raved about, only to find that I wasn’t as impressed as they were, made me ponder what factors have most impact on the enjoyment of a film:

  • Theme – an overall theme tends to help make a film have a sense of purpose. Even if the theme is basic and the scenes seemingly erratic – but not complete surreal as that is how you make an eventually cult film that turns most people off, for example ‘Lost Highway’
  • Characters – likeable characters are good as audiences tend to like having someone to root for. Equally if the lead character is dreadful that can get some traction with the audience – even if they are still unlikeable at the end. For example most of the characters in ‘The Opposite of Sex’ had a need for massive personal growtyet it was watchable (once)

  • Not too much gore; having too much gore in a film limits the potential audience massively – more so then nudity in most countries. It also makes certain types of nudity more likely – generally in the skinny dipping slutty teen variety. See any horror film aimed at a teen / young adult audience – notable mention to ‘My Bloody Valentine 3D’…
  • Well this isn’t working for me, I can’t explain why I liked ‘Get Out’ but zero interest in watching ‘The Quiet Place’, why ‘Lethal Weapon’ is more fun than ‘Mission Impossible’ although that could be that Tom Cruise is increasingly seeming creepy these days and it’s making the creepy more noticeable in earlier films

Some films are good enough to rewatch a lot over years for reasons you don’t really understand (‘America’s Sweethearts’ of all things) and others are strictly one night rentals (‘Transformers’ and one watch was too many for the sequels), some films I expect to like forever only to outgrow when I wasn’t looking (‘Run Lola Run’), if there was a logic to it someone would be making millions every time

Nails: Rubber Duckie

I’m sleeping a little better this week so my brain feels a bit less fried, of course now I’ve probably jinked it

But look at the duckie!

Maybe I can try counting duckies rather then sheep!

Royal Wedding shopping bag

Today should be a nail polish post, however I found these bags in Range today and really was tempted to buy one for my mum or for my mother-in-law

However I chickened out as one wouldn’t be amused as she doesn’t see the point of the royal family and the other would be horrified at her beloved royals being treated so tackily

Still half tempted to buy one just for fun, however would I ever use it?!

Painting walls

I’d forgotten how little I enjoy painting walls, however the guest bedroom has needed doing for a bit under 4 years – since the day we moved in

The original decor was an iffy blue and white splotch ‘design’, as if someone had taken sponges, dripped them in paint and then suffered a most unfortunate seizure

Then they put up huge dark built in cupboards that left huge holes in the wall when we took them down and stuck a dark wallpaper strip as a border right at the top just to make the room look shorter and odder

I probably should have taken a photo, however I’d much rather not remember how it looked! Now it’s white in three walls with one light blue wall, which makes it look far larger than it did

Shame the stink of paint gives me a splitting headache!

Pear Tree

In October 2016 I bought pear tree for £5, last year it did nothing at all

However this year is looking potentially promising and I’m ridiculously excited

Although now I really need to look up how if there is anything I should be doing to make it happier!

And yes the rhubarb in the background has started growing a little extremely!

Living the dream?

The tulips came out today, which is nice as they are a good couple of weeks behind last year

The goldenrod that randomly appeared in the garden last year looks to be coming back too, which is probably a good thing as my dad likes it and they don’t seem to sell it in France

(Photo from Pinterest)

I’m still not entire sure why my parents moved to France so suddenly and with so little thought or planning. Their old house is now worth well over twice what they got for it, they are going to struggle to move back to the UK and there is nothing that great about where they are – even the weather is just an extreme version of the UK weather

Yes it’s green and not at all built up, however buying anything – even basics, is a slog and it just seems rather a lot of work

I do hope they are happy, I’m just not sure that I would be if I were there…

Nails: Strawberries

As the weather seems somewhat nicer I’ve rashly planted out my new strawberry plants, I did make a note of the two varieties however that bit of paper is currently somewhere very safe…

However they are planted, are starting to look like they might flower and I’ve even put up some netting to try to prevent stomping by the very fat pigeons

(Photo from Pinterest)

Really looking forward to hopefully having some nice fresh strawberries this year as last year’s were good, however we would cheerfully have eaten more!

Long films and what to do

Monday night sort of went to plan, in so far as I made dinner with enough leftovers for an easy lunch tomorrow, had home made crumble from the increasingly huge rhubarb bush in the garden and watched a film

The film was 2 hours and 32 minutes long, that rather eats the entire evening; yes I can stick the washing machine on to get through some of the laundry pile and yes I can fuss the cats – assuming they want fuss!

As there does seem to be a fixed trend towards films over 2 hours long I really must lean to knit so I can do something useful whilst still watching: the mother-in-law knits cute little octopus things for premature babies, which really should motivate me more!

However I’m ashamed to say that having heard problems about the local hospital’s stance on the octopus knits I’m probably more likely to be inspired by hats for cats!

You get what you pay for

The time I allocated to sort out this week’s posts and generally sort my week was eaten by having to hurriedly repot all the tomato and chilli seedlings as it transpires they cheap seed compost from Aldi is indeed very cheap however it’s also very heavy and had meant very stunted roots

Which is vexing, however it was very cheap and and was worth a try, however I am not buying it again!
