Food: Cadbury Snow Balls

It’s been mildly interesting to see how much left over Christmas confectionary is still languishing in the shop, slightly discounted but still largely overpriced

I was happy to accidentally find Cadbury Snow Balls discounted enough to make trying them seem amusing; they are little balls of chocolate which you hit with a small plastic spoon to decapitate and then eat the white sugary filling

The chocolate is the standard new Cadburys style, which is a lot less nice than the older recipes, the white filling is very sweet and the highlight was probably the spoon!

Although I only noticed the small instruction to “wash spoon before use” when it was too late, oops…

Food: Mars Brownie

Mars bars are nice in extreme moderation, brownie can be nice, yet a Mars bar with chunks of brownie in sounds distinctly suspect

Happily heavy reductions can inspire me to try most things, in this case a slightly overly sweet and yet dry Mars bar

It was edible because it was chocolate derived, however either a brownie or a Mars bar would have been infinitely preferable

Food: Halloween Yumpkin

Hotel Chocolat make a grinning Halloween pumpkin and it looks cheerfully ghoulish – however at £5.50 for 50 grams I’ve never been prepared to buy one

My darling spouse kindly ventured into town on the 1st November to buy me a reduced price one; which was a lovely gesture however I like the look of it too much to actually eat it just yet

I wonder if watching ‘Sleepy Hollow’ would make me more or less inclined to eat him

Food: Over priced chocolate ice cream

As it as on offer I bought some Waitrose 1 Santo Domingo chocolate ice cream, which is apparently made with “Indulgent and rich with West Country cream and dark, bittersweet Santo Domingo chocolate”

I spent the whole tub wishing I’d paid more for the Green and Blacks version as that is so much nicer

Food: Cadbury Salted Peanut Biscuit Fingers

I like reduced price stickers, I really like reduced price stickers on weird sounding food combinations – such as Cadbury Salted Peanut Biscuit Fingers.

Salt and chocolate does seem to be very hip still – generally in the form of salted caramel, so salted peanut sounded weird.

On closer reading it is “Peanut flavoured biscuits with a salty crunch, enrobed in velvety smooth Cadbury milk chocolate.”

cadbury fingers salted peanut crunch

On even closer reading it says “may contain nuts” – may? I should hope that is does in some way contain nuts!

Anyhow, whether or not they contain nuts didn’t really impact the flavour as they tasted very mildly of nuts, a bit of salt and a lot of grit.

They were very very gritty, it wasn’t necessarily a bad taste or texture but it meant I could cheerfully eat one at a time and made 9 fingers (half the packet and technically just over two portions) spread out to last through an entire working day.

I will stick to Reeses feanut butter cups for the taste and try harder at rationing them!

Food: Cadbury creme egg biscuits‏

I haven’t tried the new recipe Cadbury creme eggs – there is one in the cupboard that has been there since before Easter as I’m too chicken to try it. However I did pick up a heavily reduced packet of Cadbury creme egg biscuits‏.

The biscuits were approached with a completely open mind and were found to be very thin chocolate with crunchy biscuit and a layer of soggy sugar.

They bore no relation to a old school Cadbury creme eggs to justify why they were branded as such. They weren’t even fun biscuits, a Twix is a far more enjoyable way to eat biscuit with thin layer of chocolate!

Food: Cadbury Marvellous Creations Jelly Popping Candy Ice Cream – Not so marvellous.

At £4 for a 500 ml tub I was expecting a certain standard from the Cadbury Marvellous Creations Jelly Popping Candy Ice Cream.

What I got was novelty value pried up to give the impression that it was a quality product.

Clearly cheap chocolate and vanilla flavour ice cream contains lumps of jelly sweet – including sugar coated ones that clash with the ice cream, and random chunks of chocolate.

marvellous ice cream

This really felt like cashing in on the success of the chocolate bar whilst offering nothing half as nice!

Very disappointing to the extent that I wouldn’t buy even if it was half the price!

Food: Lindt Bunny Paw – Disembodied chocolate

It’s Easter, let’s eat creepy chocolate!

I feel slightly mean admitting that I have bought and eaten a bunny paw,  but I have… twice!

Lindt chocolate is normally pretty low on the list of chocolate that I like, however this tastes better (less greasy) than the ball shaped ones – which rather supports the theory that the shape of chocolate changes the taste

creepy bunny paw chocolate

The Bunny Paws are rather overpriced for the amount of chocolate contained but they are an amusing gimmick…but probably only twice!

Bahlsen choco Leibniz orange – Ethics and chocolate make strange bedfellows

These were an impulse buy in Waitrose as they were chocolate covered biscuits that I hadn’t tried before and they were on offer. Although I didn’t intend to buy orange flavoured ones I ended up really enjoying them.

Bahlsen choco Leibniz orange

Which is where it gets complicated… Bahlsen use UTZ certified products, UTZ Certified is apparently a sign of sustainable agricultural supply chains – which is distinct from Fairtrade or Rainforest Alliance. I am finding all these certifications to be slightly counter-productive as it muddies the water about what “good” is.

After a bit of reading UTZ appears to be the least good of the three certifications mentioned as whilst it provides some safeguards for the people involved in the production of these products and whilst it encourages some positive eco-friendly steps it seems more like a badge used by manufacturers to stand behind and hope that consumers assume it means more ethical things than perhaps it does…

However these biscuits were tasty so every once in a while I might smile sweetly and ignore their rose-tinted corporate double-speak about their impact on people and the environment

Food: Terry’s exploding candy chocolate orange – Taste exploson?

It is coming up to Christmas so Terry’s Chocolate Oranges are in the shops and on offer everywhere.

What I hadn’t seen before was Terry’s exploding candy chocolate orange, which seems to be an attempt to win the same market as like the Cadbury’s popping candy bar

terry's exploding candy chocolate orange

Unfortunately it isn’t anywhere near as good, both because there isn’t much candy and because the chocolate isn’t as good as Cadbury’s.

To be honest it is pretty insipid and I really regret buying two of them!
