Film: Lockout – “Oh, it was coupon night and I was trampolining your wife”

Another day another film with a Luc Besson link – in this case he was partly responsible for writing it.

A CIA agent is wrongfully accused of murder and espionage, somehow a trial appears  to be entirely optional and he is offered a chance of freedom if he can rescue the president’s daughter from a maximum security prison … which happens to be in Space.

The location is about the only science fiction bit in the film!

There are some paint by numbers bad guys – complete with iffy accents, some plucky and unrealistic female antics, a good guy doing the right thing with faux reluctant.

About half way through the film I realise I’ve seen it before – or at least something really close to it, it wasn’t a good enough film to have deliberately seen twice!

Film: ‘Lucy’ – “Ignorance brings chaos, not knowledge.”

I don’t know what I was expecting from ‘Lucy’, I’d heard that it was good and the trailers made it looks like an action film. It is written and directed by Luc Besson – which can be a good thing but not always.

It transpires to really NOT be an action film, and no one had mentioned Morgan Freeman narrating over animals involved in things that involved lots of bodily fluids.

The premise is that Lucy delivers a briefcase to Mr Jang without knowing the contents, things go badly and she ends up a drugmule with a new synthetic drug in her stomach.

The drug leaks into her system and starts to change her existence – namely expanding how much of her brain she starts using and giving her mind over matter style powers.

It’s not an action film, no matter how much the trailers make it look that way, it’s a weird wander with some action scenes and a lot of theoretical babbling about the nature of the brain.

I am unsure if it is a bad film or not, I got to the end, I felt cheated by and confused as to the point of the ending so I put it in the pile of media to give to my dad. Rewatching it could either improve it but I’m not convinced.

Film: ‘The Family’ – “Why’d you beat him to a pulp? He’s the only plumber within a radius of 20 miles.”

‘The Family’ is a Luc Besson directed film about an American Mafia family who have relocated to Normandy, France under the witness protection program.

The trailer included a scene where the French were openly rude and disrespectful – which is pretty much my experience of the French and their inefficient bureaucracy is seemingly never-ending.

The film has a few scenes along those lines and I found those very amusing, the rest of the film is fine but I’m not sure it would work as well if you didn’t have the first-hand experience of just how bloody-minded the French can be.

I need to get my parents a copy.
