Film: Escape plan – “You let me go, and I’ll pretend this never happened. If you don’t, I’ll burn this f***ing place to the ground on my way out.”

There are a number of Arnie films that I like and because of these I generally trust that I will get some measure of enjoyment from any film that he starts in – I am aware that this is probably a false trust, however even ‘End of Days’ was amusing in a bad way!

Inexplicably I don’t feel the same trust with Stallone – he has been in good films including ‘Rambo’ and ‘Tango and Cash’ but I’ve seen ‘Stop! Or my mom will shoot’ and that appears to have left lasting scars.

I rather wanted to watch ‘Escape Plan’ but didn’t trust that it would be good so didn’t rush into it. I was doubly cautious after my sibling, a diehard Arnie fan, said it was dire – although my sibling can be very very VERY faddy and will love something unconditionally until they decide to hate it with the same passion.

So yay to the free trial of Amazon Prime giving me the chance to watch it without spending money, as the stuck in prison plotline wasn’t actually that interesting and Vinnie Jones isn’t that good a bad guy once you’ve seen him do it more than twice!

There is nothing wrong with the film really, but it is nothing new and I’d recommend ‘Face/Off’ as a better variation on the same theme.

Film: ‘The Last Stand’ – “I got a psychopath in the Batmobile”

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s return to acting was a cause for excitement in my household – at least for me!

I was a little concerned about a presence of Johnny Knoxville as I’d seen 15 minutes of ‘Grand Theft Parsons’, that combined with the inevitably B movie plot ensured meant that it could be hit or miss.

the last stand

The plot has Arnie as a Sheriff in a small town after leaving a higher profile role in less-than-super circumstances. Due to a slightly contrived and implausible series of events a criminal escapes from FBI custody ends up speeding towards this small town in a fancy car.

The town being the last stop before the Mexican boarder – not that the criminal wants to stop. Arnie and his guys are side-lined by the more  centralised law enforcement and basically told to stay out of the way, however this is a B movie so no prizes for guessing what happens!

From the single viewing so far I enjoyed this film far more than I dared hope! Although it isn’t Arnie’s strongest work it was a solid return from the wasteland that is politics.

Terminator

Apparently Paramount Pictures has announced that the Terminator film franchise will be resurrected in a new stand-alone trilogy, with the first instalment slated to open in theatres on 26 June 2015.

No official word on if there is a space for Arnold Schwarzenegger, but I certainly hope so!

the last stand

Arguably Arnie is a little out of practise when it comes to this acting lark – although politics increasingly seems to be style over substance!

However even out of practise there is a solid argument for Arnie being essential to include in any and all forthcoming Terminator films: ‘Terminator Salvation’ is what happens with no Arnie.

Strictly speaking ‘Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles’ is also an argument in Arnie’s favour, however I’ve blocked out most of it.
