Salmon Bacon – What could go wrong?

I do honestly want to eat healthily and I do make an effort, but sometimes my good intentions steer me incorrectly.

Like deciding that salmon bacon was worth trying – I like bacon, I’ve been vegetarian so I know exactly what it is like to not have it but at the same time I am aware that it isn’t fabulously healthy… at all

salmon bacon

Salmon bacon sounds good on paper, for example it contains 192 calories per 100g – which contrasts sharply with real bacon having about 275 calories in the same weight There is also a significant fat content difference.

However it tastes like fish, sliced fish, but still clearly fish!

It came with a sachet of sweet syrup to pour over (or dip?) which just added to the oddness in my opinion. It might work well for a more US style fish bacon, waffle and sauce meal, but I’d much rather have the treat of a bacon sandwich for breakfast!

Food: Olives – No animal parts

After the Gu surprise I’ve decided that it might be a good time to start treating my body a little more like a temple, so I decided to try eating olives again. I don’t actually really like them, but I keep hearing that they are good for me

Last time I tried eating them for a bit with only the vaguest of ideas about why they were good for me – and also with no idea of sensible serving size!

I did look at a variety of random internet pages and the consensus olives in small doses are generally deemed ok – this being under 100 grams or somewhere between 4 and 8 olives.

They are healthy because they contain mono-unsaturated fatty acids which promote good cholesterol and also something called oleocanthal which *might* have anti-inflammatory properties – if it helps my knee I will try anything!

Black olives are supposed to be particularly healthy and you need to avoid dodgy genetically modified oils such as Canola.

As the Mediterranean diet is still being pushed as being fab this is probably worth the effort of choking the darn things down.

Food: Vegesentials Celery, Apple, Kale & Kiwi Juice – So so green

I am trying to be mindful about what I eat, trying being the operative word as I seem to be fixated on sugar right now due to weird stuff at work STILL being ongoing.

So to try and balance the scales I am trying odd juice – I am planning to get a juicer in the new house and to REALLY try to get on with it this time… the last juicer was a cheap mistake that didn’t paint anyone in a good light.

This week’s random juice was Vegesentials Celery, Apple, Kale & Kiwi Juice, as you can probably guess it was very very green.

Vegesentials

It was also disgusting. The balance is apparently 40% Celery, 40%, Apple, then 10 each of Kale and Kiwi, I am not sure what percentage of pond slime is in this but it tastes about 92%.

Even on offer I am never buying this drink again no matter how good for me it claims to be! The Savse ones are much nicer!

Food: Savse Smoothies Super Blue

The Savse green smoothie was a little scary but that didn’t stop me from trying the blue one!

savse smoothie blue

The blue one contains:

375ml Apple (Juice)
105ml Blackberry (Pulp)
105ml Orange (Juice)
60ml Strawberry (Pulp)
45ml Blueberry (Puree)
30ml Beetroot (Juice)
15ml Kale (Juice)
15ml Spinach (Juice)

It basically tastes like apple and blackberry juice with a beetroot aftertaste! Not too bad but not super either!

Food: Savse Super Green Smoothie – Super scary green smoothie

Both my yoga and Pilates teachers have raved about green smoothies so I decided to try one – admittedly a commercial one but it was very green!

Savse Super Green was on offer and the only one that my supermarket stocked – it was also fantastically green and lumpy looking…
savse smoothie

Apparently it contains the following, is cold pressed and is completely unpasteurised:

150ml Pear (juice)
80ml Broccoli (purée)
5ml Kiwi (pulp)
5ml Lemon (juice)
5ml Banana (purée)
4ml Kale (pulp)
1ml Spinach (juice)

The colour and texture did really put me off – the broccoli is surprisingly lumpy, but once I got over both of those factors it was ok. It is never going to be mistaken for a treat but there are worse ways to eat your greens!
